NRC

"NRC" full form (Full Name)

NRC in Hindi means 'National Citizen Register' which is called the National Register of Citizens in English. Assam is the only state in the country, where the National Civil Register i.e. NRC is in place. Recently, the National Civil Register (NRC) in Assam has become a major issue since the last draft was released.

 About the NRC

In 2015, it gained momentum on the direction of the Supreme Court. After this, verification work of citizens started in Assam. NRC centers were opened across the state. To be a citizen of Assam, people had to hand over the documents. In November 2017, the Assam government told the Supreme Court that by 31 December 2017, they will update the NRC.
The first draft of the much-awaited National Civil Register was published on 31 December 2017. About 3.29 crore applications were submitted in Assam to legally identify as a citizen of India, out of which only 19 crore people have been named.
This was followed by the final draft in July 2018. However, the Supreme Court has, for the time being, banned any kind of strictness on the 40 lakh people whose names are not in the list. However this list was updated again and released in 2019, which does not include the names of 19,06,657. A total of 3,11,21,004 people have been included in the final list.

Objectives of National Citizenship Register

The original purpose of NRC update in Assam; Foreign citizens and Indian citizens have to be identified in the state. Organizations like All Assam Students Union and other citizens of Assam claim that Bangladeshi migrants have robbed them of their rights and are involved in criminal activities taking place in the state. Therefore these refugees should be sent to their country.

Data about NRC:

The government has spent around Rs 1,200 crore on the NRC process, involving 55000 government officials and 64.4 million documents were scrutinized throughout the process.
